I wish I could say that I always dreamed of being a Snow Cone Guy or having my own Ice Cream Shop but honestly, in the beginning, selling Water Ice was just an after thought. I always had a entrepreneurial mindset and I remember subscribing to a Business Magazines that referenced Franchise Business Opportunities. However, living from paycheck to paycheck, with no savings; it was fair to say that my start up budget at the time was Zero. Undeterred, it just forced me to look up Franchise’s that required the least amount of start up money. I didn’t care what it was. Low and Behold; I see a opportunity to become a Franchisee of Water Ice, ironically it was the most feasible, considering my lack of finances. I remember saying to myself; Ed you can do this. The hustle didn’t look bad, it was family oriented, the potential to make some good money was there. Problem was - the passion wasn’t. The water ice guy, Come on man!!
Fast forward to me finding my true calling, which was Coaching. For those that know me, also know that I was literally born at the Boys and Girls Club. First out the South Side fathered by the likes of the late Great Sherman Cunningham, the later to move on the hill and be fostered by another late great Terry Eisner, Harry Haffer, Lionel Duffin, George Coldwell and countless others that help mold me into always wanting to give back. I guess you can say that Coaching and giving back is simply in my DNA. With that being said, eager to give back and sort of pick up the mantle, I started my own AAU Traveling Basketball Team. I couldn’t help but to recount the times that Lionel Duffin (Duff) took me and countless of other athletes to numerous basketball tournaments and tracks meets and how much I looked forward being a part of every last one of them. All I had to do was stay out of trouble. Poor city kid traveling for the first time to battle kids from another city or state. Sign me up Coach. I knew that starting my own AAU Team could help keep a lot of kids out of trouble; I was living proof. However, what I didn’t know was just how expensive it can be. The expenses quickly proved to be too overwhelming for most of the players parents and then eventually (considering my no child left behind policy) if you’re family couldn’t pay.... “Coach Eddie Gotchu”. Needless to say, unfortunately it became overwhelming for me as well, resulting in me having to suspend the last 3 traveling tournaments. That immense feeling of disappointment for letting the kids down, made me vow; for the love of the kids, I would never start a project on their behalf that I couldn’t finish.
NOW ENTERS THE PURPOSE
Thus Ed’s Water Ice was Born to create a financial pipeline to avoid any shortcomings going forward. I figured that if I pulled this off - the more money I can make selling Ice - the more kids that I can sponsor and the more programs I would be able to offer - the more kids I would be directing to a court, a field, a pool, a bowling alley, a track, a library, a church, a university, a career, anywhere other than being in the streets, which where I’m from, they call "The Devils Playground". In doing so, with my roots being from Philadelphia, I embarked on my journey vowing that if I do this - I wanted to make sure I brought the best of the best water ice that Philadelphia had to offer until I eventually earn enough to purchase my own equipment and perfect my own blend.
Until then, please enjoy the best Water Ice Philadelphia has to offer!!!
